Quilting in Layers: An Art Quilt Technique

Make this small Tulip Quilt to learn an innovative quilting technique. Not free motion quilting–just straight stitching with a regular foot. No tension problems, no knots, no thread breaking, no learning curve! Quilt through the 4 inch squares, one at a time, through the top and batting only. Learn how to add applique and center squares. Then sew the pre-quilted squares together, add the backing and quilt through all three layers. I am always asked if it is “quilt as you go.” Not really! We do NOT sew the backing on in little 4 inch squares, but all in one piece, 25″ by 25″ along the grid lines. At that point, you can be finished quilting. Next step binding! No wrangling the top into the few inches of throat space on your home machine. You can decide to further free motion quilt on the applique, if desired.
